THE VINCE CARTER SANCTUARY CONSTRUCTION
KICK-OFF A ROUSING SUCCESS
The
Vince Carter Sanctuary Construction Kick-Off a Rousing Success Last
night the Charter Room at the Ginn Hammock Beach Resort in Palm
Coast was abuzz with excitement over the imminent construction of
Stewart-Marchman Center's expansion project - The Vince Carter Sanctuary
- which will provide world class treatment to those struggling with
drug and alcohol addiction. Over 200 attendees representing Volusia
and Flagler County's business community, as well as local and state
political leaders, were treated to words of inspiration by Michelle
Carter-Scott, who encouraged the community to get involved because
no one is insulated from the effects of substance abuse.
The
major donors acknowledged at the event whose contribution is assisting
the dream of this world class facility to become a reality: Bobby
and Michelle Ginn, Vince Carter, Michelle Carter-Scott, Austin Outdoor,
Brown & Brown Insurance, and Bright House Networks.
Eddie
Schatz, founder of Austin Outdoor was inspiring when discussing
the impact the Vince Carter Sanctuary will have in addictions research
conducted by the University of Florida's McKnight Brain Institute.
This
celebration would not have been possible without Bobby and Michelle
Ginn, who hosted the celebration. The Ginns were instrumental in
getting this campaign started and their expertise in property development
played a crucial role in the design of this project.
Bobby
Ginn closed out the evening challenging attendees to make it their
responsibility to raise awareness in the fight against drug and
alcohol addiction by supporting the Vince Carter Sanctuary - even
after the front doors open for the first time, for that is when
real change begins to occur.
Anticipated
construction of this 37,500 square foot facility begins March 2008
with completion by January 2009.

Area
Agency Plans Prevention Fair
Despite
disturbing statistics on drug use by young people in America, millions
of lives have been saved through education and prevention, and others
improved dramatically through treatment and recovery. The Stewart-Marchman
Center (SMC), our area's leading substance abuse and addiction treatment
services agency will recognize the 17th Annual National Alcohol
and Drug Addiction Recovery Month by hosting a Prevention Fair designed
to support the 2006 theme "Join the Voices for Recovery: Build a
Stronger, Healthier Community." The Prevention Fair will be held
Saturday, September 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. outside the Wal-Mart
on Beville Road (at Nova) in Daytona Beach, where staff will be
handing out free material, speaking with the public and answering
questions, as well as promoting services available to them. "We
are targeting mostly young adults and adolescents," said Victoria
Kress, SMC's Regional Prevention Director, "but we hope to reach
the entire community. It seems everyone has a family member or a
friend or coworker who is experiencing a problem with addiction,
or children they want to help remain drug free. They need help,
they need facts, and they need to know what services are available."
Recovery Month highlights the benefits of treatment for and recovery
from substance abuse disorders, recognizes the contributions of
treatment and care providers, educates the public that substance
abuse disorders are a treatable public health problem, and encourages
community support to help eradicate the stigma and discrimination
associated with these disorders. It is an opportunity to emphasize
the benefits of treatment, remind the community that treatment is
effective and that recovery is very possible. The mission of Stewart-Marchman
Center is to improve, through prevention, intervention, and treatment
services, the quality of life of individuals and families affected
by substance abuse and delinquency. For more information on its
programs and services, call the Access Center, 888-516-2296 or visit

STEWART-MARCHMAN SUPPORTERS HELP THEM
CROSS THE FINISH LINE
Dinner-Auction Event Keeps Stewart-Marchman Center in the Race
The Stewart-Marchman Foundation’s Annual Dinner and Auction was
held Wednesday, June 28, at the fabulous Daytona 500 Club at the
Daytona International Speedway. Now in its eighth year, the fundraiser
once again raised approximately $100K for the landmark substance
abuse facility’s community programs. This year’s honoree was NASCAR
driver Kyle Petty, who was recognized for, among other charitable
endeavors, his work with the Victory Junction Gang Camp, which provides
seriously ill children with a week of theme park-size fun. His parents,
Richard and Lynda Petty, emcee Benny Parsons, other NASCAR drivers,
officials from NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway, and representatives
of major businesses and organizations, as well as gracious supporters
of the Stewart-Marchman Center, enjoyed an evening of food, fun
and camaraderie. Tickets to the popular event were again sold out,
weeks before the date. Attendees enjoyed many exciting auction items,
but perhaps the biggest win was the Stewart-Marchman Center and
its clients when NASCAR President Mike Helton waged a bidding battle
with Jon Hall Chevrolet dealer Glenn Ritchey for a Speedway leather
jacket autographed by Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson. Helton
placed the high bid, and then, in the true spirit of the evening,
offered the jacket to Ritchey for his showroom if he would match
the bid. After Ritchey agreed, the pair had contributed an additional
$6,000 to the cause. Virtually every major Volusia and Flagler County
business or corporation was represented at the sold-out event, and
Stewart-Marchman was pleased to acknowledge Bright House Networks,
Daytona Beach Police Department, L. Gale Lemerand, NASCAR and Wachovia
National Bank as its biggest, Checkered Flag sponsors.

SMC PROGRAMS GO SMOKE-FREE AUGUST 1ST*
On
August 1, 2005, Stewart~Marchman Center will implement Tobacco Cessation
treatment as a part of standard treatment procedure for drug and
alcohol problems. Nicotine is a drug that has effects on the human
brain similar to both cocaine and heroin. Recent research has shown
that nicotine challenges the recovery of alcoholics and drug dependent
clients in the same way that continued use of any addictive drug
does. In order to offer our clients the most effective treatment
services and do all that we can to reduce the suffering and social
costs resulting from the abuse alcohol and drugs, Stewart~Marchman
Center will prohibit the use of tobacco products within residential
programs and on the premises of outpatient programs, and will limit
the use of tobacco products in detoxification programs.
To
support our clients in this challenge, tobacco cessation courses
will be offered in detoxification and residential treatment programs.
In outpatient programs tobacco cessation issues will be addressed
in the course of treatment planning and counseling. In addition,
assistance in the form of appropriate medications to counter depression
and craving and nicotine patches for the detoxification process
will be offered to clients.
We
are well aware that detoxification and abstinence from tobacco presents
a challenge greater than that of any other drug. We hope our clients
may capture some motivation to meet this challenge in considering
the benefits to their health, longevity, social freedom, modeling
the behavior they want their children to learn, and saving a lot
of money. Stewart~Marchman Center will do all it can to make their
effort successful.

SMC IMPLEMENTS NEW PROGRAMMING FOR VOLUNTARY CLIENTS*
"RIGHT
TURN"
A
Motivational Style Brief Intervention For Voluntary Clients
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The "Right Turn" program is a brief clinical
intervention for medication/substance dependent persons enrolled
in SMC's Outpatient Detoxification Program, as well as for other
individuals voluntarily seeking a motivational style brief intervention.
Motivational
Enhancement Therapy (MET) has been selected as the evidence based
approach for delivery of these services as MET has proven to be
highly effective in changing behavior following brief interventions
with clients. MET is based on well-recognized principles of motivational
psychology, and is designed to generate rapid change for the client,
in a non-threatening and non-confrontational manner. This model
employs strategies such as focusing on client strengths rather than
weaknesses, respecting client autonomy and personal decisions, developing
therapeutic partnerships, recognizing the reality of coexisting
disorders, accepting small steps as definitive progress, and assisting
clients in mobilizing their own unique abilities toward improving
their way of life. Right Turn will consist of an intake, followed
by four weekly group sessions, followed by an individual discharge
session.
